Adding Videos and Slideshows to Border Beat (These instructions were prepared by Michael McKisson)
We have found that Firefox works better on the back end of Border Beat than either IE or Safari. We'll give you directions in class about how to sign in to the administrative end of Border Beat.
DIMENSIONS: Your projects should be 500 pixels or fewer wide. FINAL CUT In Final Cut, after you have edited your piece, select “File” > “Export” > “Using QuickTime Conversion.” When the save screen pops up, name the file and then click the “options” button toward the bottom of the page. Options: 1) Click “settings” and move the quality slider in between low and medium quality. Click “OK.” 2) Click save.
Final Cut will begin compressing your video, which can take some time. When the file is done, check how big the file is. It needs to be lower than 7 megabytes in size for web streaming. It is more than 7 mb return to step one above and move the slide closer to low. Compress the video again. If you are creating a slide show using Final Cut, you can help make the slide show smaller by resizing your images before you import them into Final Cut. To do that open your images in PhotoShop and resize the images to 72 pixels per inch. Save the files for web and import those into Final Cut. Once your video or slide show is finished compressing, right click the file on your desktop and select “get info.” Verify that the size of your Final Cut project it less than 7 mb. UPLOADING FINAL CUT PROJECTS Once you have finished exporting your project and verified it is under 7 megabytes in size, you can upload your story to the Web site. 1) Login to the site 2) Click on the thumbnail, “media manager” or click the word “site” and select “media manager” 3) When in the media manager, click the folder titled, “stories.” 4) Once you are in the “stories” folder, click the “videos” folder. This is the folder you will upload your videos to. 5) Click the “browse” button at the bottom of the page and select your Final Cut video. 6) Click the “start upload” button. The video will appear in the folder when it is finished uploading. 7) Go to article manager to create a new story or locate an existing story to add it to. 8) Click the “AVR media” button at the bottom of the text area. 9) Click on the “local media” tab. 10) Select your video 11) Change the dimensions to match the dimensions of you video. 12) Click insert.
You can insert the video above, below or inside the text. If you want the video to appear on the section front, make sure you put the “read more” line underneath the video. SOUND SLIDES
Creating and sizing your slide show
1) Select “create new project” 2) Select a size that is smaller than 500 pixels wide 3) Name your project and save it. 4) Uncheck “full-screen enabled” 5) Begin loading your images and audio
Exporting and uploading your slide show
1) When done editing your slide show, click the “export” button. 2) A window will open up with a folder titled “publish_to_web” 3) Select all the files in that folder and right click them 4) Using a mac, select “compress 6 items” in the screen that pops up. 5) In Windows, after right clicking, select “send to” and then select “compressed (zipped) folder.” 6) Rename the zip file to match your story slug. Make sure you limit it to one word. 7) Login to the Web site. 8) Click on the thumbnail, “media manager” or click the word “site” and select “media manager” 9) When in the media manager, click the folder titled, “stories.” 10) Once you are in the “stories” folder, click the “videos” folder and then click “slideshows” folder. This is the folder you will upload your soundslides to. 11) Click the “browse” button at the bottom of the page and select your zip file. 12) Click the “start upload” button. The zip file will appear in the folder when it is done uploading. 13) Check the button below your zip file and then click the “unarchive” button in the top toolbar. 14) When you see a folder named the same as your zip file, you know you have uploaded it correctly. 15) Delete the zip file, not the folder. 16) Go to article manager to create a new story or locate an existing story to add it to. 17) Click the “AVR media” button at the bottom of the text area. 18) Click on the “local media” tab. 19) Select the corresponding soundslides swf file. 20) Change the dimensions to match the dimensions of your slide show. 21) Select “plain flash” in the media drop down menu. 22) Click insert. 23) Save your story.
