How to Add Text and Photos to  the Border Beat Web Site

These instructions were prepared by Michael McKisson for the Border Beat staff.

(ALWAYS USE FIREFOX WHEN WORKING ON THE WEB SITE)

We will give you instructions about how to sign in to the back end of the Border Beat site so you can add print, photo, and multimedia content. We didn't want to put that info online.

Adding a story:

1)      Click “Article Manager” on the main screen.
2)      Click the green + button on the top right.
3)      Type in the story's headline.
4)      Select BOTH a section and category for your story.
5)      Copy your story from Word.
6)      Paste the story you copied into the main text box online.
7)      Highlight all the text by pressing “apple” and “a” or “control” and “a” on a PC.
8)      Select “paragraph” from the drop down menu titled “format”.
9)      Type your name in the “author alias” line.
10)  Click “metadata” on the right column.
11)  Add a description to the “description” text block. You can also copy and paste the lead into that space if it works.
12)  Add 5-10 keywords separated by commas. Think of which words you would Google to find your story.
13)  Add your intro text and any images you want to use for the intro above the main body of your story.
14)  Click the “read more” button.
15)  Click save.
16)  Verify your story showed up in the section and category you selected.
17)  Verify that the story looks right by going to borderbeat.net. (Be sure you hit the “refresh” button when you return to borderbeat.net to make sure your changes are read. If it doesn't look right, troubleshoot the article and try again. If you can't fix it, change the story to unpublished and alert the Web Editor.
18)  Make sure you save your story and then refresh the browser window where you were viewing the finished story to check the changes you made.

Adding links to a story:

1)      In the story highlight the text you want to turn into a link
2)      Click the icon that looks like a chain
3)      Paste the URL of the link into the box “Link URL.”
4)      If the link is to a different Web site, select “Open in a new window” in the “Target” drop down menu. If the link you are creating is on our Web site leave it as “open in this window.”
5)      When done adding links, click save.
6)      ALWAYS check you link to make sure it is working. Refresh the story after adding a link to see if it is working.

Adding photos:

1)      Open your photos in Photoshop.
2)      Change you image size by going to menu item “image” and select “image size.”
3)      Change the image resolution to “72” pixels per inch.
4)      If the image width is more than 500 pixels change it to 500 pixels.
5)      Click OK.
6)      Click “File” and then “Save for Web” Make sure to save as JPEG .
7)      Rename the photo to match the story slug.

11)  Click the “Browse files” button.
12)  Find the image you want to upload and click OK.
13)  Click the “Start Upload” button.
14)  When the photo is uploaded, go to “Article Manager” and create a new story or open an existing story.
15)  Move your cursor to the spot in the story where you would like to add the image. If the image starts above the red “Read More” line, it will show up on the front page.  If it is below the red line, it will only show up in the body of the story when someone clicks on it.
16)  Click the “Image” button at the bottom of the page.
17)  Select the photo you want to add.
18)  Click the “Caption” button and add the caption text into the “Title” line.
19)  Use the “Align” menu to select right or left alignment on the page.
20)  Click “Insert” to add it to the story.
21)  You can resize the photo by clicking on it and using the black squares on the corner of the photo to make it smaller. You don't want to make it bigger than the original because it will pixelate the photo.
22)  Save the story.
