(Every semester students ask about what kind of equipment to buy that will help them do all the multimedia required of today's journalists. To help out with those decisions, Kim Newton, a spectacular photographer and great professor took the time to prepare his list of recommendations. This is the equipment list he shares with his own photo classes, so I thought this information might be helpful to you also. Kim points out that, "It is a random list of equipment that includes pro and consumer models. Prices and models of the consumer equipment listed here change hourly, the pro equipment list is more stable." ) - Jay
Suggested Camera and Audio Equipment List Prepared by Kim Newton (Fall semester 2009) The following is a list of digital photography camera equipment that will produce professional quality images. The range listed here includes consumer point and shoot and professional digital DSLR camera bodies. Even though, you may not purchase a professional camera it is important to know what they are. This is a suggested list only and is provided as a guide for those who may want to purchase a new digital camera. The prices listed are examples only and may be priced differently depending on the retail outlet. The professional DSLR’s listed here are for a camera body only and do not include lenses. It is suggested that you purchase the camera manufacturers lenses, i.e., Nikon lenses for a Nikon camera or Canon lenses for a Canon camera. It is also suggested that when buying lenses to never buy variable aperture lenses. Come see me if you plan to purchase a professional DSLR and I will be happy to discuss lens quality and purchase outlets with you. The list here only includes Canon and Nikon, as these are the models used by professional photographers. The cameras listed below produce between 8.0 and 21.1 mega pixel files. Camera List Revised August 22, 2009, Fall2008_v Suggested Audio Equipment List As with digital cameras, audio equipment is available in consumer and professional models. Just as the quality of images is crucial in the professional world, so to is the quality of audio used in multimedia. People won’t spend much time looking at out of focus pictures and the same is true to trying to listen to bad audio. Again, I have listed some consumer models that are fairly good, but I have also listed some professional models. It is not expected that you buy a professional model audio recorder, but it is important to know what they are.
All the models listed here will produce a digital file that is transferable and compatible with the audio and video editing equipment used in the school of journalism. Some audio recorders have built in memory, this is fine as long as it produces an audio file that can be transferred to a computer and is compatible with the school’s editing software. A separate microphone is also required. Please see me if you have any questions about purchasing audio equipment. As with cameras, models and prices are changing all the time. The prices here are from the last time I looked on B&H Photo and Video. Do your research; you may find these products cheaper elsewhere.
