The New England Patriots’ crisis continued in Frankfurt’s second game in NFL history. The Pats lost to the Indianapolis Colts 6:10 (3:7) in a game that remained quiet for a long time. With a 2-8 record, New England is still at the bottom of the AFC standings and the pressure on legendary coach Bill Belichick will likely continue to increase.
The Colts, on the other hand, now have a balanced record of five wins and five losses and have maintained their slim outside chance of making the postseason.
For the Patriots, quarterback Mac Jones was sacked for the final drive of the game after throwing a foul interception. Bailey Zappe took over, but was unable to overturn the deficit and instead finally ended the game with another interception.
Both the Patriots and Colts go on byes a week after the Germany game. After that, New England will have to go against the New York Giants, the Colts will receive the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In front of 50,000 spectators at Deutsche Bank Park, the Patriots got the ball first and marched down the field primarily with running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott. However, the offense failed to score a touchdown; kicker Chad Ryland converted a 37-yard field goal to take the lead.
The biggest thing in the NFL
The Colts did better on their first drive. A 30-yard pass from quarterback Gardner Minshew to Isaiah McKenzie put Indianapolis in the Patriots’ half, followed by running back Jonathan Taylor. The former All-Pro received the ball multiple times and ultimately finished the drive with the first touchdown of the game on his fourth attempt.
NFL in Frankfurt: quiet second quarter
At this point the first quarter was almost over due to so many running plays. But things didn’t go at the same pace, neither attack managed to produce an effective shot in the following minutes.
It wasn’t until the end of the first half that the Colts improved the situation. After an initially impressive drive that ended scoreless, Minshew once again led his offense down the field in the final attack.
Kicker Matt Gay had a chance to make a field goal, but his 57-yard attempt was too short.
The second half begins with an interception
The second half opens with the first great action by a defense. Minshew’s deflected pass landed in the arms of Patriots defender Myles Bryant, who caught his first interception of the game.
